A Parent’s Back-to-School Health Checklist (It’s More Than the Physical)

August has a way of disappearing. One week you’re at the beach, the next you’re hunting for a sports physical appointment because practice starts Monday.

So here’s the checklist we wish every family had on the fridge, covering the things that usually get remembered and the ones that usually don’t.

The usual suspects

The physical. Most schools and athletic programs require one, and August appointments book up fast. If your teen plays a fall sport, this is the first domino: no clearance, no practice.

Vaccines and paperwork. Check what the school needs before the first day, not after the nurse sends a note home. New Jersey requirements change by grade level, so don’t assume last year’s paperwork covers this year.

Vision and hearing. A kid who can’t see the board often looks exactly like a kid who isn’t paying attention. If grades slipped last year and nobody could figure out why, start here. It’s the easiest explanation to rule out.

The ones that get skipped

The sleep reset. Move bedtime and wake-up earlier in 15-minute steps over the last two weeks of summer. Teens especially need this runway. Their sleep clocks drift late naturally, and first period doesn’t care.

The mental health check-in. Ask how they’re feeling about the year, and then wait for the answer. New school, friend drama from last spring, a hard teacher. What you’re listening for isn’t the worry itself, it’s whether the worry has weight to it. If it does, our post on back-to-school anxiety covers what to watch for.

The support services conversation. If your child has a 504 plan or IEP, or you think they might need one, don’t wait for the school year to get rolling. Reach out to the school counselor now, while calendars are still open. Advocacy works best before there’s a problem to react to.

The two-week countdown

If the checklist feels like a lot, here’s the simple version. Two weeks out: book the physical, check the school’s paperwork list, and start walking bedtime back. One week out: do the school dry run, sort supplies, and have the how-are-you-feeling conversation somewhere low-pressure, like the car. Kids talk more when nobody’s making eye contact.

The night before, resist the urge to make it a big event. A normal dinner and a normal bedtime tell an anxious kid more than a pep talk ever will: this is just life, and we’ve got it handled.

Where we fit in

North Jersey Health and Wellness offers adolescent primary care and specialty care, so physicals, well visits, and the harder conversations can happen under one roof, with providers who already know your kid. One appointment, one location, and you’re not re-explaining your child’s history to a stranger every time something comes up.

We also partner directly with schools through our Comprehensive School Health Solutions program, supporting students’ physical and behavioral health where they spend most of their day. If you’re a parent, that means our team understands how schools actually work. If you’re a school administrator reading this, we should talk.
