In Maslow’s hierarchy of needs socializing comes directly after our needs for sustenance and safety. The need to feel connected to other humans is stronger than most might realize and in quarantine we have to get creative in order to fill that need. If you need some ideas for social interaction in times of physical distancing, we’ve got you covered!
Try one (or all) of the following:
Front Yard BBQs. Bring your neighbors together for a socially-distant gathering. Everyone can cook their own meal on their lawn and wave at their neighbors from across the street while getting some much needed fresh air! Bonus if there is a designated DJ.
Backyard Concert. Assuming you have similarly minded neighbors, musical inclinations, and the right backyard orientation – try setting up a concert in your own backyard for all your neighbors to enjoy! This might take some planning, but the pay off could be epic.
Zoom Parties. Who says Zoom is only for office meetings? Make plans with friends for a virtual happy hour and enjoy a social distancing approved night out.
Date Night. It may not be a perfect replacement for the real thing, but a virtual date can be fun in its own unique ways. Get creative and cook together, watch the same movie, or do something else entirely – the options are endless!
Take a Walk. Everyone is out walking now, even going for a stroll down your own street can result in a few friendly interactions – though bare in mind that you still need to keep your distance from others who are walking.
Get Active on Social Media. Even short conversations with others can feel refreshing in times like these, what better place to find some than social media?
Work on Your Yard. It’s no secret that gardening is relaxing and gardening together is even better, we are lucky enough to be experiencing this quarantine during the perfect season for it. Take advantage of any extra time and spend it with those you are in quarantine with while beautifying your outdoor spaces. Then sit back and enjoy them!
Reconnect. Find an old contact that you haven’t spoken to in a while and reach out, they will likely be happy to hear from you!
Everyone needs to socialize, it is a stress reliever and basic need to feel a sense of belonging. Remember we are all in this together even if we are physically distant from each other!
