Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder- OCD, can impact the flow of your life, making it difficult or impossible to accomplish everyday activities. People with OCD become tormented by repetitive thoughts or the "compulsion" to engage in activities that they realize are unnecessary and don't want to do, such as repeated hand washing.
There are effective treatments available to help alleviate these disabling symptoms. Two of the most impactful modes of treatment are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy-CBT and Medication. With CBT, the individual learns how to understand their own thought patterns and identify those thoughts that are central to the compulsive behavior, thus having the choice to change the thought.Medications are also helpful and often used in conjunction with CBT. SSRI's, the same medication often used to treat depression, are very effective in the treatment of OCD.
